Express Entry

Express Entry (EE) is a system in Canada to screen and select immigration nominees for permanent residency to qualified workers. Those who are under the following three categories of immigration programs are eligible to apply to enter Express Entry pool:

  1. The Federal Skilled Worker Class (FSWC)
  2. The Canadian Experience Class (CEC); or
  3. The Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC).

A portion of the Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) are aligned with Express Entry, but candidates still must be eligible under one of the three federal programs in order to enter the Express Entry pool.

How to become a candidate in the Express Entry Pool?

The candidate must meet minimum entry qualifications for one of the immigration programs mentioned above. These qualifications include:

  • Age
  • Education
  • Working experience
  • Language proficiencies

measured under a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The ranking score for Express Entry is based on the CRS and is out of 1,200 points. Candidates can improve their rank by taking steps to improve their CRS score. The higher a candidate’s CRS score, the higher the likelihood of them being selected.

The CRS score is used as a cut-off point in  Express Entry draws. It is designed to project a candidate’s likelihood of being economically successful in Canada. It ranks different candidates based on four factors:

  1. Skills and experience
  2. Spouse or common-law partner (i.e. language skills and/or education),
  3. The transferability of skills (i.e. education, previous work experience)
  4. Additional points of nomination from a province or a valid job offer (through LMIA)

Selection process:

Through periodic draws, qualified candidates from the express entry pool will receive Invitation to Apply (ITA).

After receiving an ITA, the applicant will have 60 days to submit an application for permanent residency in Canada. If you do not receive an ITA, you will continue to be in the Express Entry pool for 12 months and you must wait for the next draw.

The minimum requirement of CRS Point continues to change constantly.
